About Us
Cumbria Waste Group is the largest regional waste management contractor operating in Cumbria and across the north of England and southern Scotland. The group has been operating for over 30 years and now has over 5,000 customers spanning the commercial and public sectors.
We offer the very best solutions to our customers to ensure that their waste resources aren’t wasted but instead the value is recovered in the best way possible.
The needs of the smallest business customers are very different from the largest and most complex industrials – but we cover them all so you can be assured of a solution that is right for you and helps you to make a contribution to our environmental goals and challenges.
Our focus is on resource recovery through recycling. Not all recycling is the same. Our goal is to create substitute raw material products for use in remanufacturing processes and to maximise the environmental benefit from the materials we collect from you.
We employ around 350 staff at more than 20 locations across Cumbria, North Lancashire and Teesside and our customer base also reaches from the Scottish central belt, across to Northumberland, Tyneside, Teesside, Yorkshire, and down to Cheshire and Humberside and all points in between.
For our many local authority customers we not only collect recyclable materials from the doorstep but process them in our state-of-the-art processing plants to extract maximum value from recycled materials.
Our customers range from single holiday lets to property management companies, utility companies, hotels, retails outlets to the most complex industrial plants. We have in-house experts, including chemists and a technical team coupled with an extensive fleet of over 50 vehicles that enable us to tailor solutions to meet any customer’s requirements.

Our operational sites consist of four materials recycling facilities (MRFs), a liquid waste treatment plant, two landfill sites, aggregate recycling plant and a hazardous waste transfer station.

Our Facilities
We have four primary operational sites in Carlisle, Workington, Penrith and Middlesbrough. Each site has a MRF (Material Recycling Facility), baling and bulking operations for pre-sorted materials and the capability to separate mixed waste streams. Materials that are segregated on site include but are not limited to:
- Plastics of all kinds – including polymer separation
- Cardboard & paper
- Metal – including aluminium and steel cans
- Wood
- Glass
- Green waste
- Construction/demolition waste
- Hazardous wastes
- Waste electrical equipment (WEEE)
Hespin Wood is the premier waste management park between Lancashire and the central belt of Scotland.
We have recently opened a state-of-the-art
recycling facility that processes mixed recyclates of all kinds and uses the latest technology to produce highest grade products.
As well as being the home of two of our MRF’s, our flagship site Hespin Wood near Carlisle is home to a wood and green waste recycling facility. This facility alone processes around 70,000 tonnes per year.
Also sited at Hespin Wood is our aggregates recycling plant. This is where we crush, clean and sort mixed aggregates into reusable material for the construction and building industries.

facility our liquid waste treatment plant and our hazardous waste transfer station. The hazardous waste site is licensed to accept a wide range of drummed and packaged waste streams.
With a team on qualified chemists based on site to offer
professional guidance, the service is not only comprehensive, but it also provides our customers with peace of mind that their most hazardous and challenging waste streams are being handled in a safe and compliant way.
Our Flusco site is home to a newly extended MRF. This is a valuable asset to the business as it allows us to increase capacity for the area in terms of collections and increasing recycling outputs. Our Flusco site is home to a

Our newest acquisition has given us the ability to service commercial businesses and domestic customers through Local Authority contracts, and is capable of processing any mix of recyclate streams, including plastics, paper, card, glass and cans. Our newest acquisition in Middlesbrough has given us the ability to service commercial businesses and domestic customers through Local Authority contracts and is capable of processing any mix of waste or recyclate streams, including plastics, paper, card, glass and cans.
Our base in Lancaster allows us to serve our customers in the Lancashire region. We offer a full range of services in this area to an ever expanding base of customers.
