Quarrying business acquired

Cumbria Waste Group has expanded its business after purchasing a stake in sand and stone quarry.

We have entered into another joint venture with Inglewood, purchasing 50% of Lakeland Minerals, which operates the Kirkhouse Sand Quarry, near Brampton, east of Carlisle.

This is a new area of business for the Group, which is now able to add quarried sand and gravel to the list of recycled aggregates it already has available for sale. Aggregates are materials used in construction, for example they are an essential ingredient in the production of concrete.

CWG Managing Director Mike Bareham explained: "The purchase of the 50% stake in Lakeland Minerals represents a significant investment and forms part of the ongoing growth of the Cumbria Waste Group, which also includes a skip hire business, Trotters Skips, and a facilities management company, Orian.

"The sand quarry will complement our existing aggregates recycling facility as we will be able to process sand & stone from the quarry and sell this, alongside our recycled products, to the construction industry for use for use in concrete, rendering and asphalt products on roads or housebuilding, for example.

"Lakeland Minerals also uses the sand in blended products such as top dressing and root zone for sports pitches and golf courses, which is a new market for us."

The acquisition of the quarry is creating new jobs at CWG, the first being the role of Sales Manager, which the company is currently recruiting for.
