Young recyclers

A group of young Beavers who have been named the nation's best recyclers have visited two of Cumbria Waste Group's facilities.

The youngsters were given an exclusive tour of our Hespin Wood facility in Carlisle and our Flusco site in Penrith.

This followed their success in the ‘Ready, Set, Recycle’ challenge, which saw young people in Scouting across the country compete to recycle the most plastic, paper, card, metal and glass packaging items in their homes. Of the 60 plus sections who eagerly submitted their recycling achievements on The Scout Association website each week, it was 1st Appleby Beavers who triumphed in the hotly contested first place after recycling an impressive 6,213 items over the course of 12 weeks.

This popular challenge was launched to both help increase the local recycling rate, and to show Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts across England and Wales how simple recycling is, and the positive benefits all their hard work has. From flattening cardboard and rinsing out plastic, glass, and metal packaging, those involved made it their mission to recycle as much as they could from around their homes.

The tour of CWG's facilities gave the troop a fascinating insight into the journey their recycling goes on once it’s collected.
