Our History

Cumbria Waste Group was formed back in 1993 to operate and manage the council’s portfolio of landfill sites. The business was owned by Cumbria County Council but operated as a standalone commercial business. At that time there was very little recycling and understanding of effective resource management.

Over the course of the last 30 years the business has transformed into a provider of recycling and resource management services not just in Cumbria but across the north of England.

Domestic waste in Cumbria stopped being landfilled following the construction of the two treatment plants in Carlisle and Barrow in 2010. This prompted a shift in our focus to recycling and we pioneered the introduction of kerbside recycling in Cumbria alongside the local councils.

Today we handle hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste materials and have invested heavily into technology and equipment that helps us maximise the environmental benefit we can secure from each tonne.

Most recently the Group has moved into private ownership and secured significant investment and growth capital to support further regional expansion.

The waste sector in the UK is still maturing and there are a wide variety of options available to customers.
At Cumbria Waste Group we pride ourselves on our reputation for compliance, transparency and sustainability in all that we do. We operate to a core set of values and behaviours that define all that we do.

It is an exciting time to work in the recycling and resource management sector and we are determined to relentlessly pursue.
